String City
This body of work titled “String City” embodies the architecture of downtown Jacksonville. I created this work with the intention of showing the buildings in a lighter approach than they are typically viewed. The buildings of downtown Jacksonville have a high importance in the dynamic of the city – they are used as the city’s main business district and contains a great deal of Jacksonville’s history. There are multiple definitions of the what “downtown” Jacksonville is but for this project, I stayed in the “historic core”. Some notable buildings I photographed include the Bank of America Tower, TIAA Bank Center, and the SunTrust Tower.
My approach to this project was to show the cold, structural architecture of downtown Jacksonville in a playful way. I started by photographing such buildings in an abstract manner. Once I compiled my desired images, I digitally turned the images black and white and printed matte prints. With colored embroidery thread, I threaded and stitched patterns directly into the prints. The patterns varied from directly mimicking a pattern seen in the architecture of the buildings to random patterns used to visually enhance the frigid structures.
